"Beautiful. World-Class"

One of Australia’s finest lyric coloratura tenors, and under new artistic management, Henry Choo was born abroad but raised and schooled in the cultural city of Melbourne. Originally trained as a pianist and violinist, Henry achieved an Associate Diploma in Singing under the tutelage of Noel Ancell OAM. He furthered his vocal and operatic studies at the Melba Conservatorium of Music and the Australian National Academy of Music, and with French repertoire specialist and vocal educator Susan Falk.

He is an alumnus of both the Young Artist Program of Opera Queensland and the Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Development Program of Australia's national opera company, Opera Australia, and was recently nominated for a
Green Room Award for his portrayal of Martin in Lyric Opera of Melbourne's 2014 production of The Tender Land. Read more.

what critics say

"Tenor soloist Henry Choo, as the Soldier, gave every single ounce of himself to his performance, his assured, glossy tone imbuing the role with pathos and a real depth of expression."

Luke Iredale, ClassikON
An Australian War Requiem

Sydney University Graduate Choir, Sydney 2014

"Tenor Henry Choo's voice as Nadir blossomed with colour and honey sweetness as soon as he opened his mouth."

Peter McCallum, Sydney Morning Herald
The Pearlfishers

Opera Australia Sydney 2012

"The sorrowful tone of the work is reminiscent of German lullabies… Choo's voice radiated those values with warmth and honesty. The combination of power and delicacy in his voice gave life to the material and his control introduced a wonderfully engaging dramatic tension and suspense. The overall effect saw the audience being led away into a timeless world where now and again the hairs bristled on the back of the neck as the audience hung onto every note and every audible meaning regardless of the language barrier."

Heather-Jean Moyes
The Seasons | Winterreise
Adelaide International Guitar Festival 2012

"Henry Choo delivered a superb performance both vocally and dramatically. His was a character with purpose and strength. The gorgeous tone of his lyrical tenor voice never sounded so good. His Act I aria (Dalla Sua pace) was delivered with suave Mozartian finesse, a beautiful legato line, musical phrasing and colouring of dynamics. The rest of his performance was also vocal gold."
